Black Oud opens with a dry strike of oud, incense, and patchouli, creating a dark resinous outline from the first seconds. After a few minutes, rose appears, but not as sweetness: it is muted by smoke and stays in the shadow of a woody core of papyrus and cedar. Cardamom and pink pepper in the top give a brief spicy spark before the scent settles into a deeper, steadier line. In the base, moss, musk, sandalwood, and labdanum keep the trail warm, slightly balsamic, and dry. In character, this is a woody-resinous unisex fragrance with an evening mood and a composed presence. It performs best in cooler weather, when its smoky and mossy facets read more clearly.
