Saffron
Saffron smells dry, leathery, metallic, and glowing, with a strange mix of hay, warm skin, and medicinal brightness. It is one of perfumery’s most immediately recognizable spices: luxurious, airy, and sharp-edged at the same time. Saffron appears in ambery woods, leather perfumes, oud blends, orientals, and many modern niche fragrances built around texture and radiance. It can make sweetness feel drier, leather feel smoother, and woods feel lit from within. Used well, saffron leaves a golden stain across the whole composition. Its now-iconic modern signatures include Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 and the smoky leather warmth of Byredo Black Saffron.
