Benzoin

Benzoin smells warm, resinous, and comforting, like vanilla darkened by amber, polished wood, and the soft smoke of temple resins. It has a balsamic sweetness with touches of caramel, almond, and spice, but it stays smooth rather than edible. In perfume benzoin is a key note in amber, oriental, gourmand, woody, and incense families, where it rounds harsh edges and gives a glowing, enveloping base. It can make patchouli softer and citrus more velvety on the drydown. It is a signature in Guerlain Shalimar, where it deepens the famous vanilla-amber accord, and in Diptyque Benjoin Bohème, where the resin feels supple, smoky, and quietly opulent.
